Our LaMancha Dairy Goat Herd

In 2012 the average milk production was 2297 lbs (8 lbs to a gallon of milk), 3.9 % butterfat, and 3.1 % protein.

The American La Mancha is thought to originate from Spain. Imported into Mexico and spread up California with the missionaries these short ear goats found there way into Mrs. Eula Fay Frey’s herd.

She initially culled all the short eared goats out as she was not impressed with their looks. They did use a short eared buck on the does that they didn’t intend to keep kids from for a short time and a doe kid resulted from one of those breedings that captured Mrs. Frey’s heart. From “Peggy” came Mrs. Frey’s La Mancha herd.

The breed has a long history of using the best bucks from other breeds to establish a nice structurally correct doe with high milk components, lots of milk and long lactations. The short ear is a very dominate trait so most of the kids from a cross breeding end up with a short ear.

The herd book for La Mancha’s remains open to this day so after 7 generations of breeding to purebred La Mancha bucks the resulting offspring can be registered as a purebred La Mancha.
